A judge has ordered a restaurant in suburban Kansas City to be temporarily closed because the owner repeatedly refused to obey a mask order.
Jackson District Judge James Kanatazar on Friday upheld the district’s motion for an injunction against Rae’s Cafe in Blue Springs.
The county also filed a motion to permanently prevent the owner from breaking the health ordinance.
Prior to the judge’s verdict, Jackson County health officials and sheriff’s deputies ordered cafe owner Amanda Wohletz to close because the mask mandate had been ignored. But business continued on Friday morning.
Rae’s Cafe’s food permit was suspended last week. The owner then reopened as a private club, charging customers $ 1 to join and prohibiting masks.
Jackson County said in a statement that it would “take the necessary steps to ensure health regulations are enforced.”
Wohletz has said that she and all of her workers are medically exempt from the mask mandate, but has not explained what medical conditions they have, The Kansas City Star reported.
The county said that Rae’s Cafe is the first store it tried to close for failing to comply with the county’s requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.
