It’s been a month of gathering outside in parks and under shady trees (aka air conditioning in the Bay Area), revitalizing the community and continuing to try to build a new foundation from the rubble of the past few years.

Meanwhile, the following former community havens, some loved by locals for decades, have chosen the start of summer to say goodbye.

Berkeley

SHEN HUA The mainstay of the Elmwood neighborhood, Shen Hua has been a dear friend to Berkeley students and residents for 25 years. “My favorite place on earth,” commented one Instagram follower, amid widespread angry reactions to owner Edward Chu’s announcement on social media, which was posted on the front door of the Chinese restaurant. The Daily Californian called it an “important staple of the campus experience” and deeply mourned its loss as a celebratory restaurant that will be sorely missed. As mentioned on SF Gate, Shen Hua is one of several popular Chinese flagships in the East Bay neighborhood that have closed in recent months. Diners are beginning to fear seeing homemade signs on doors. Shen Hua was at 2914 College Avenue.

SHIHLIN TAIWAN STREET SNACKS The Berkeley location near Cal of this Taiwanese street food chain has closed after five years. Luckily, there are still six locations across the Bay Area, from Fremont to the Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco, where fans can still find their fix. The Sather Lane space in Berkeley has already reopened as Noody (see this month’s new openings). Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks was located on Sather Lane on Durant Ave. 2431, Suite B

COTTON CANDY We hate to tell local bakers, cake decorators, and confectionery makers, but Linda Moreno’s one-stop boutique haven for chocolate, caster sugar, candy molds, bakeware, and all the essential and specialty confectionery items for the high-end confectioner (or hobbyist) is closed. In addition to being a sugar shop, Spun Sugar was a wonderful local resource for sugar art classes, and Moreno emailed Nosh that her reasons for closing the shop were to deepen that focus. “I’m just changing my path to teach more,” Moreno said, “and saying goodbye to a six-day work week and long hours.” Sweet news for prospective students. Spun Sugar was at 1611 University Ave.

TAKO SUSHI Open for at least 15 years, probably longer, Tako Sushi was a convenient, student- and budget-friendly sushi and bento box favorite on Telegraph Avenue with a casual dining room and back patio. Guests recently noticed some hiccups in terms of service and quality, and then one reader informed us (thanks!) that Tako appears to have closed “in a hurry” — the space is spooky, and even the outside signs’ writing has been hastily removed . The website and phone have been disconnected and attempts to reach the owners have been unsuccessful. Students, we are sorry for your fast casual sushi loss. Tako Sushi was at 2379 Telegraph Ave.

Oakland

GOOD TO EAT DUMPINGS POP-UP AT ORIGINAL PATTERN BREWING CO. This Taiwanese dumpling group’s brand new Emeryville brick-and-mortar at 1298 65th St. is in full swing, so the team said “so long” to their four-year pop-up at Original Pattern Brewing Co. in late June. A farewell post honored theirs hosts and experiences there, calling the departure a “bittersweet ending.” Prepare to queue at their new permanent dumpling shop. In the meantime, Original Pattern has a number of upcoming pop-ups planned, including dishes from Citizen Pizza and Woo Can Cook. Good To Eat Dumplings used to be a pop-up business at Original Pattern Brewing Co. in Oakland.

NIKKO’S FAMILY RESTAURANT This one will bring back memories for many: An Alameda tipster told us that Nikko’s Family Restaurant in Oakland, near Alameda, has closed for good and has been serving decades of old-school diner-style breakfasts, fried chicken steak, burgers, spaghetti, Drinks and coffee – all available (pre-COVID) 24/7. Nikko’s undated menu says it’s been served in the Bay Area “for over 60 years,” but since management has left and records are patchy — one page simply reads, Yogi Berra-style, “Nikko’s has served the Bay Area since it opened.” — Nosh hopes there’s a reader or Oakland historian out there who can actually pinpoint an inaugural year. Because that’s the kind of place that’s going away, and some of us still need that kind of place. Thanks for all the come-as-you-are, late-night, post-bar, pre-graveyard shift ham and eggs, Nikko’s. And for all those no-frills family meals, too. The East Bay will miss your gently eccentric nighttime retreat and your fabled diner booths, counters and bar stools, and for those who may not be familiar with the wonders of a classic all-night diner – unfortunately, you may never know, what you’re missing, at least here. Nikko’s family restaurant was at 340 23rd Ave.

OAK HARVEST KITCHEN Plant-based downtown restaurant Oak Harvest Kitchen (which also houses Zella’s Soulful Kitchen, see below) has closed. The seven-year-old restaurant was known for its fresh, flavorful vegan and vegetarian dishes and friendly service. According to an Instagram post, the team at Oak Harvest — part of the Mandela Partners group — hopes to continue and expand their valuable kitchen training programs for those seeking employment in the food industry, but the restaurant itself has closed. Oak Harvest Kitchen was located at 499 14th St.

soul disk Juneteenth would have marked the first anniversary of this stylish soul food and cookie crust pizza restaurant, but it’s been marked as temporarily closed online for several weeks. Attempts to reach the owner went unanswered, and despite its strong start in 2022, including backyard gospel brunches and rave reviews from guests, Soul Slice’s phone has since been disconnected and emails to the listed addresses are being bounced. If we’re wrong please let us know, but it appears to be completely closed. Soul Slice was at 5849 San Pablo Ave.

ZELLA’S SOULFUL KITCHEN Chef and caterer Dionne Knox, a graduate of La Cocina and Mandela Grocery Cooperative, opened her downtown counter, Zella’s Soulful Kitchen, in December 2019. Named after her grandmother, the business shared space with Oak Harvest Kitchen (above) and served farm-fresh California-style soul food. Both restaurants are now closed but please note: Zella’s very popular catering business will remain open while Knox seeks a new location for the restaurant. PATATAS CUISINE Emeryville has lost one of its coziest restaurants, as first reported by the E’ville Eye. “Dear friends and customers,” reads the letter on Patatas Kitchen’s website. “We would like to thank you for all of your support over the years. It has been an honor and privilege to serve you and be a part of this wonderful neighborhood.” Chef and owner Marcos Quezada founded Patatas as a farmers market business in 2012 and moved to the Emeryville storefront in 2017 where he shifted his focus from the shifted in-house gastronomy to catering, take-away sales and delivery. The food was nutritious, often Latino, like an international deli, with Spanish tortillas, empanadas, paella, soups, and stews; a later pandemic pivot with co-owner and chef Rebecca Stevens streamlined the menu to focus on fried chicken, savory sauces, sandwiches, salads, and sides — as one Yelp reviewer put it, like home cooking but actually healthy. Patata’s Kitchen was located at 3986 Adeline Street in Emeryville.

Ricky’s corner In our 2019 roundup of quieter East Bay restaurants, old-fashioned rodeo favorite Ricky’s Corner – described as “straight from another era” – was a notable choice among locals, and we were unduly heartbroken when it opened its doors last month saw close. as first reported by Eater. The comfortable full-service restaurant and lounge was opened in 1978 by Rick and Judy Bratton, who first met while serving at Vera’s Villa Valona in Crockett. The Brattons quickly gained a following for Ricky’s Corner’s home-style cooking, including exceptionally good fried chicken, and its friendly, family-friendly atmosphere. Rick Bratton died in 1995, and Judy and her son and daughter-in-law continued to run the restaurant until its last day on June 25. “We want to express our gratitude to each and every one of you,” says the farewell message, which has been circulating on social media. “From our regular customers to out-of-towners to those who have only had our meal once. Every interaction has helped make our restaurant a place where people can come together, feel welcome, be a part of our family and of course… fill their bellies and sometimes even their hearts.” Ricky’s Corner wasn’t on a corner at all . It was located on Parker Ave. 18 in rodeo.

Temporarily closed

LOS MOLES EMERYVILLE The very popular Los Moles location in Emeryville now has a notice on the door and website that it is temporarily closed for the time being. As E’ville Eye noted, no timeline for the closure or explanation was given, and attempts to reach Los Moles management to learn more were unsuccessful at the time of publication. Los Moles El Cerrito and San Rafael are both open. We’ll keep you up to date. Los Moles Emeryville is located at 1320 65th St. in Emeryville.
