I tried Drake & DJ Khaled’s favorite Toronto restaurant and am already planning my next trip

Since both Drake and DJ Khaled recently showed some love for Toronto’s Italian restaurant Sotto Sotto, I decided I had to try it myself.

The popular spot is in the heart of Yorkville and is definitely a bit more expensive, but with our boyfriend and I approaching our one year anniversary, we decided it was worth the money.

This was our experience:

The food

Antipasti Gordonia. Right: L’amatriciana.

We decided to order the antipasti Gordonia ($28.95) and the beef carpaccio ($24.95) and although I enjoyed both, the star was the antipasti.

It came with deliciously smoky grilled tiger prawns, calamari, caprese salad, grilled eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and asiago cheese.

This may sound strange but the zucchini was my favorite dish we ate all night! Before this experience, I was quite ambivalent about the veg, but something about how it was cooked made it sing. It was light, sour, flavorful and truly an experience.

For mains we got two pasta dishes: Pennete via frattina ($27.95), penne in rose sauce with asparagus and vodka salmon, and L’amatriciana ($27.95), bucatini in tomato sauce with crispy pork cheek batter.

Both were delicious and came in fairly hefty portion sizes. As the restaurant is fancy, I was reluctant to expect a small portion, but it was so generous that I couldn’t finish my meal.

Overall, before the tip, our bill came to $152.83 for two drinks, two appetizers, and two pasta dishes. It’s a bit more expensive than what we would normally pay for a date night, but given the quality of the food and the experience, it was totally worth it.

The drinks

A soda, a cocktail, and my stegosaurus purse called Genevive.

My friend ordered a gin based French 75 cocktail which cost about $20 and the presentation was very nicely done.

I personally ordered a limonata (a lemonade) and it was pleasantly sparkling.

The wine list is incredibly extensive and while you can buy a bottle for around $60, I’ve also seen a listing for a bottle that costs almost $3,000!

Maybe this fits into Drake’s budget, but I’m sticking with my $6 soda for now!

The mood

When we got to the restaurant, a Porsche was parked in front of the valet so the offbeat vibe was immediately there.

The host area is beautifully decorated and we were greeted immediately. Before being seated we had a chance to take a look at the bar where it seemed solo guests could be seated which is a great option if you are having a date night by yourself.

The seating area had romantic lighting – dim but not so dim that it was hard to see – and strings of lights that added a little whimsy to the whole feeling.

Also, the dining area didn’t have a lot of seating, so it had a pretty intimate feel to it as well.

The service

Our waiter Zeno was an absolute gem and made our experience at the restaurant so beautiful. His eye for detail and passion for what he does is clearly evident and I can’t say more about how damn nice he was to us.

From making sure our water was stocked to trying to trick us into getting a tiramisu (we were too full but next time!), I hope we see him again when we go to one return for another special occasion.

Everyone we dealt with was very nice but thanks to Zeno for being the best!

I really enjoyed our anniversary dinner at Sotto Sotto and I’ve already decided what I want to try next time.

I think on our next visit we will share the charcuterie board, share the cacio e pepe and of course try the tiramisu that Zeno recommended so highly.

In terms of making a reservation I couldn’t really book online but when I called on a Sunday I was able to get a reservation for Tuesday so I would recommend contacting them directly.

All in all, I totally see why it’s a celebrity hotspot – who knows, maybe we’ll meet Drake next time we’re there!
